Background

After the release of the band's 2010 album, Hell Chose Me the band started work on Until I Feel Nothing after their supporting tours for it. With Hell Chose Me's noticeable advanced shift in style that was ultimately praised by critics,[1] but still having fans of their previous sound, the band decided to create Until I Feel Nothing as a combination of these two sounds.[2]

The album was produced by the band, along with Tim Lambesis, vocalist for As I Lay Dying at his production studio, Lambesis Studios.[3] A music video was produced for the title track and released the same day the album was launched.[4]

The album was generally praised by critics for its musicianship, but overall, received mixed reviews. Clarke Read of Revolver favored the band's musicianship in his positive review by saying; "The band still transitions between riffs with all the subtlety of a rhino charging through a brick wall, the symphonic passages sound like they were recorded in a cave, and you’ll find things more original than their riffs in the cereal aisle. But on this fourth outing for the Californians, they’ve further refined the art of crafting catchy hooks."[7] SMN News closed their praising review with stating; "while it isn’t exactly the 'Master of Puppets' of this generation, 'Until I Feel Nothing' is an unexpectedly solid release nonetheless. It will take you a few spins for it to completely sink in, but the addition of atmospheric and black metal influences has made Carnifex a much stronger entity, and it’ll be very interesting to see what they come up with for album number five."[9]

On the negative side, Austin Williams of The NewReview gave the record a score of 2.5 out of 5, criticizing the album's short run time and lack of experimentalism by saying; "Carnifex is average to a fault. They have a comfort zone and do little to ever escape it, or even outperform their previous material. The musicianship is great, but not anything you would even be mildly surprised by, reflecting the lack of an adventurous spirit found throughout this album."[10]
